Un pandoro per la distrofia

Cara amica, caro amico,

se mi conosci, sai che ho qualche difficoltà nel muovermi. Forse però non sai che la causa è una distrofia muscolare: la mia si chiama distrofia di Becker. Le distrofie sono un gruppo di malattie genetiche rare che provocano il progressivo deterioramento delle fibre muscolari e possono portare alla perdita della capacità di camminare, a problemi cardiaci e respiratori e a una debolezza muscolare generalizzata.

In Italia le persone che convivono con una distrofia muscolare sono migliaia, di cui circa 1.500 con le forme di Duchenne o Becker. Al momento non esiste una cura, ma la ricerca sta facendo grandi passi avanti, con approcci terapeutici che hanno già migliorato la vita di noi pazienti.

Da trent’anni c’è un’associazione che ha dato, e continua a dare, un enorme contributo a questi progressi, sostenendo la ricerca e accompagnando i pazienti e le loro famiglie: Parent Project. Da qualche anno ne faccio parte anch’io e posso testimoniare che ha cambiato in meglio la vita di tante persone, compresa la mia.

If you know me, you know that I have some difficulty getting around. But you may not know that the cause is a form of muscular dystrophy: mine is called Becker muscular dystrophy. Muscular dystrophies are a group of rare genetic disorders that cause the progressive deterioration of muscle fibers and can lead to the loss of the ability to walk, heart and respiratory problems, and generalized muscle weakness.

In Italy, there are thousands of people living with muscular dystrophy, of whom about 1,500 have Duchenne or Becker muscular dystrophy. At present, there is no cure, but research is making great strides, with therapeutic approaches that have already improved the lives of us patients.

For thirty years, there has been an organization that has made—and continues to make—an enormous contribution to these advances by supporting research and providing support to patients and their families: Parent Project. I’ve been a part of it for a few years now, and I can attest that it has changed the lives of many people for the better—including my own.

This Christmas, you can contribute too—by choosing some holiday treats that will be delivered right to your door, or by making a simple donation (unfortunately, we do not ship outside of Italy).
